Originally from Jacksonville, FL, Megan Chin received her BFA in Painting from the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) in Baltimore, Maryland. She currently lives and works in Brooklyn, New York.
My work seeks to visualize the fluidity between independence and codependence within relationships. I gather groups of individuals together to physically interact using various prompts. I then use documentation of these intimate acts to access the vulnerability of interdependence within my paintings. Creating conversations with an emphasis on physical listening, I focus my search on questions rather than answers. What is it to support someone? What is it to be supported? What is authentic shared experience? These prompts are experimental interactions aiming to emulate supportive, community-based understandings of empathy. My interests lie in better understanding the actions and intentions of others. I’m fascinated by the balance of reliance between the individuals that make up a group. Experimenting with figurative gestures I blend the borders between isolation and connectedness.
